Workshops

Step beyond the electric kiln and into the elemental world of woodfiring—a process where fire, ash, and time collaborate to create surfaces impossible to replicate. This immersive workshop is designed for experienced potters ready to deepen their practice and embrace unpredictability as a creative partner.

Over the course of the firing cycle, you’ll work closely with a community of dedicated makers to load, stoke, and manage a traditional soda wood kiln. As temperatures climb and flames carry ash through the chamber, each piece becomes a record of the journey—marked by natural ash glazes and atmospheric variation unique to this method.

Participants will gain hands-on experience with kiln preparation, firing rhythms, and material considerations specific to woodfiring. Equally important, you’ll engage in shared problem-solving, late-night stoking shifts, and reflective discussions that enrich both technical skill and artistic perspective.

This is not just a workshop—it’s a commitment to process, patience, and collaboration. If you’re ready to challenge control, welcome surprise, and connect more deeply with the raw forces that shape clay, woodfiring offers an unforgettable path forward.

Community

More than just a workshop, this experience is meant to create community among makers looking to expand and deepen their creative practice.

Your Work

Each participant will bring their own bisqued work that is wadded and ready for the wood firing. Be prepared to be amazed, as you you will see the unique variation from the wood firing across your collection.

Hands-On

As this workshop is very hands-on, participants are expected to be physically capable of repetitively lifting, bending, chopping and standing for long durations. This method of firing also involves exposure to extreme heat and live flames, as such, participants are expected to keep safety in mind at all times.

Celebrate

After this challenging, yet fulfilling experience, we like to celebrate our success, usually with a celebratory dinner/potluck. We will discuss the learnings and the beauty of our creations!
